Volunteers from Thompson Electric Company and Electric Innovations will collect your purchase at the artist’s booth and give you a valet ticket to reclaim it when you’re ready to leave the festival. Just call the number provided to let the Art Collectors know that you’re leaving, then pick up your purchase at the Thompson Electric Company/Electric Innovations trailer located on Larsen Park Road near the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center.

FRIDAY EVENING
EXHIBIT OPENING, RECEPTION, AND SILENT AUCTION

A pre-festival event sponsored by First American Bank gets the ArtSplash excitement going. The Friday evening exhibition opening, reception, and silent auction is an adult event that provides an opportunity to get “first look” at work in the juried art show, to browse and bid on artwork donated for the silent auction, and to enjoy delicious appetizers provided by Kahill’s, Minerva’s, and Red Robin. A cash bar will serve wine, beer, soda, and water.

Ambience

Ambience, a jazz quartet featuring talented area musicians Ray Guntren, Greg Olsen, Sam Irish, and Mike Guntren will deliver the perfect accompaniment to a fabulous evening along the river. Ambience was formed and named by Ray Guntren. The group has played for numerous functions requiring tastefully selected “standards,” bossa novas and pop selections.

Ray Guntren has been playing guitar for over 45 years. He plays a variety of styles, but his heart and soul are rooted in Jazz. He has performed with a variety of groups like Jill Miller, Girlfriend, Sioux City Jazz Orchestra, Northwest Iowa Jazz ensemble, NASMD big band, Sioux City Symphony and Doreen’s Jazz New Orleans who was a featured group at the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Festival.

Sam Irish, when he isn’t playing bass with the Rockestra, plays with many other local and regional bands. He plays everything from Jazz to folk music and a lot of styles in between. Sam’s musical training began at the age of seven on the organ in his parent’s home. Sam spent twenty years playing bass professionally, and worked for many years with a band called “Hot Rod Chevy Kevy,” and backed artists like Gene Pitney, Freddie Canon, Del Shannon, The Shirelles, The Drifters and Chuck Berry. He also worked with a group called “The Danny Tyler Band.” Sam was born and raised in Sioux City where he still resides with his wife Stephanie and his children, Sam Jr. and Maggie.

Greg Olsen has played drums professionally for thirty-seven years, working with many popular groups in the Sioux Falls and Minneapolis areas. Greg was a member of the original JAZZTET, which was the first Jazz group to tour South Dakota under the sponsorship of the South Dakota Arts Council twenty-nine years ago. He has performed with the Everly Brothers, Ike Cole, Gene White and Friends, the Sioux Falls Big Band, Grace Notes Quartet and the Doc Walker Quartet. Greg lives in Sioux Falls.

Mike Guntren, the tenor saxophonist, is Ray’s son. Mike has played with many area big bands and combos, and is currently playing with Magnificent Board of Directors. Mike graduated from Morningside College with a degree in music and is general managers for Ray’s Mid-Bell Music.

More than 50 artists have joined 2008 Official Commissioned Artist Daniel Lager and noted area artist Deb Gengler-Copple in donating work for the silent auction. You can browse and bid as you as you enjoy the reception.

This premium event is provided as a special thanks to sponsors and those who have donated $100 or more to the festival. It’s also a fundraiser that supports future ArtSplash festivals. Admission at the gate is available for $25 per person. Reception wristbands are used only for this special pre-festival event and do not provide admission during the festival on Saturday and Sunday.

The art exhibits will be open from 4 to 8 pm; the reception and silent auction run from 5 to 8 pm under the pavilion. Shuttle buses will run from 3:30 to 8:30 pm. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy a wonderful evening with your friends as you support the visual and performing arts in Siouxland!
