Alexander Helwig Wyant

Alexander Helwig Wyant was born in Evans Creek, Ohio in 1836, but soon after his birth, his parents moved to Defiance, Ohio where Wyant would go to school. In 1864 he started exhibiting at the National Academy of Design in New York, travelling to Germany in 1865 to study briefly with Hans Gude in Karlsruhe before returning via England and Ireland. In 1878 the Society of American Artists inducted him into their membership, and he was a founder of the American Watercolor Society. For the last ten years of his life he was paralyzed on the right side, forcing him to re-learn to paint with his left hand, in spite of his disability, he continued working continuously until his death in 1892.
