Drawing Classes

Explore the fundamentals of drawing while experiencing and recognizing your own emerging style. Study and apply design elements of art; respond to visual stimuli through careful observation and repeated practice while experimenting with traditional drawing tools: charcoal, conté crayon, pencils, and pen and ink. A model will be used for the figure studies section. All materials are provided. Drop-ins are welcome at a pro-rated cost. (Member $15 – Non-member $18)

Have you always wanted to paint but did not know how to begin? Painting with acrylics is one of the easier methods. Learn basic composition, how to mix and blend colors, brushes, how to care for your brushes and painting materials and about appropriate painting surfaces for acrylic paint.

This is a course intended for students with elementary to advanced experience in painting. Emphasis will be on color theory and understanding the properties of color, specifically value, intensity and temperature. Modern technology has simplified much of the photographic process making it easier to attain a successful snapshot; however, to consistently create exceptional photographs, it is important to learn composition, perspective, lighting and how to express one’s artistic vision. Doug will help students develop the skills to create unique photos, while also teaching how to print black and white images in the darkroom. Bring a non-digital camera and B & W film to class. A multitude of materials such as paint, printing, paper, fabric, wire, beads and found objects may be used within the piece. The artwork may remain flat, be “in relief”, or progress to a three-dimensional format. Your imagination is the only limit to the artistic possibilities. All supplies and equipment will be provided. This class is an introduction to forming, decorating, glazing and firing clay objects. The hand-built clay techniques use pinch, coil and slab construction. The potter’s wheel will also be introduced with instruction on centering and building the various parts of a vessel. Enjoy learning the fundamentals as well as intricacies of this ancient craft. Stained-glass artistry can be applied in designing windows, mirrors, lamps, and picture frames. Even though the class covers everything for the beginner, more experienced stained-glass artists are welcome. Debra’s primary art form is “Pique-Assiette”…the art of the mosaic. She will show how to create beautiful images using broken plates, tea cups, glass pieces and ceramic tiles. Please bring any china that you are willing to transform into an alternate thing of beauty. You may also bring a favorite small piece of furniture on which to apply tile…or use a wooden plaque that Debra will provide on which to create your work of art. Enjoy relaxing evenings of intense focus on this unusual art-making adventure. Some materials will be provided. This class is available for renewal credit for teachers through NWAEA.

Students will explore different clay and glazing techniques while using various hand-building methods: coil, slab work, and pinch techniques. They will also participate in interesting clay projects: modeling animal sculptures, carving portrait masks, building scaled-down forts and houses, and creating functional bowls and pots. An introduction to wheel-throwing will enable each child an opportunity to try his/her hand at the wheel.

Each Saturday Art Lesson begins at 10:30 am sharp. (Don’t be late.) Students will work in a variety of media, ranging from painting with acrylics, to drawing with pastels, printing with inks, molding with clay or sculpting in plaster, wire, or wood. Children will be guided through a fascinating art-making experience each day. Artwork will be sent home at the end of each class. No pre-registration is expected…pay as you go...come on the Saturdays you can. Bring your friends! Dress to be messy. If children 5 years and younger participate, they should be assisted by an adult to help them with the project.
