For the novice to intermediate student, this class is a fun hands-on approach to wheel throwing, forming, decorating, glazing and firing clay objects. Emphasis will be on developing a personal style and striving for consistency. For the beginning or intermediate level potter.

 *This class is available for renewal credit through NWAEA. 

* Please note: The clay studio now has a standing (waist-high) pottery wheel accessible to those with back and arthritic problems.

Tuition for all clay classes include: Use of equipment, tools, one 25 lb. new slug of pugged clay, glazes and firings. Students may purchase additional clay if needed. Any clay used in the studio must be purchased at the Gilchrist Learning Center.

This class will be an extensive study of useful pottery such as teapots, goblets, casseroles and planter’s. Conducted through demonstrations, discussions and structured practice, students will fine tune their wheel throwing skills and engage in exercises that will develop continuity before form and surface.

Beginning Wheel Throwing - Tuesdays/Thursdays

This class will focus on learning the basic skills of centering, opening and pulling vessels followed by forming cylinders and bowls. Students will learn trimming and finishing techniques as well as using glazes and underglazes to finish their work.

Students will explore various hand-building methods: coil, slab work, drop molds and pinch techniques. Emphasis on surface finishes, textures and design techniques will include layers, underglazes, and the use of familiar and unconventional tools. All levels welcome.
