Tar and Gasoline is inspired by both the playfulness of early 20th century Expressionism and the use of black that became common during the age of Abstract Expressionism. Cowden later moved to Washington, DC to complete his master of fine arts degree at Catholic University, and worked in graphic design, illustration, calligraphy, and teaching.
