Bernard de Hoog became respected in the late 19th century for his paintings of small interiors featuring women and children. Many Dutch artists in the late 19th century became particularly interested in portraying a real portrait of the simple values of regular people. The use of subdued colors such as brown and gray was a common choice for these artists to convey a mood. De Hoog used a soft light to highlight the faces of the mother and infant to make the image seem more intimate.
